Arusha
National Park is home to Mount Meru, but because of some of the local, better-known parks competing for safaris, it is all too often overlooked and underrated. It is in fact a lovely little park, with the added advantage of being only around 45 minutes away from Arusha town. This one day extension includes transfer to and cost of Arusha hotel on half board basis; all travel, food, national park fees, and guiding services as detailed below; return to Arusha, use of hotel/lodge dayroom, and transfer to Kilimanjaro airport.
At the end of your trek/walk, you are transferred by road to your hotel (generally the Ilboru Lodge) in Arusha for a very welcome hot shower, and to enjoy a relaxing overnight stay including dinner and breakfast. You will be collected from your hotel the next morning after an early breakfast and driven by your wildlife guide to Arusha National Park. The park is very compact at 137 sq km but has a great variety of habitats including grassy plains and hills, lakes, forest and even its own crater.
The Ngurdoto Crater sits at the eastern edge of the park, is 3.6kms across and 100m deep, and has plentiful wildlife on its marshy floor. The whole park has the spectacular backdrop of Mt Meru to the west, Africa's 5th highest peak, and on clear days, enjoys views across to Kilimanjaro, which is 50kms away to the east. The best time to visit is between June and February, as greater numbers of game should be seen then, although it may rain around November-time.
The day will be spent with game drives (morning and afternoon), and a stop to enjoy the scenery with a packed lunch. The park has a variety of plains game including zebra, giraffe, buffalo and warthog; blue monkeys and black & white colobus are found in the forest; bushbuck and waterbuck are around the wooded and watery areas; and abundant birdlife will be seen around the lakes, with large numbers of flamingos for much of the year. Occasionally, leopards and spotted hyenas can be seen.
In late afternoon, we head back for dayrooms in the Momella Lodge to clean up and prepare for the evening flight home.
As an optional extra, we can arrange a peaceful and scenic canoeing safari inside the park. The two hour guided canoeing safari follows the shorelines around Small Momella Lake and is in stable, two-person canadian canoes, enabling you to experience a much closer and personal look at nature.
The wildlife to be seen includes buffalos at close range knowing they will not charge, hippos in the middle of the lake, and amazing water-birdlife from close-up on the water at bird height! This unusual type of safari is a highly recommended trip and gives a totally different game viewing experience. If you are interested in the canoeing safari, please Contact Us or show this clearly on your booking form.
