All meals are provided during the trip.  The camp food we take on trekking or walking trips is as varied, nutritional, and balanced as possible.  As much as possible of the fresh food we use (eggs, vegetables etc) is bought directly from the local markets in Arusha and Nairobi. In view of the duration of the trips, it is important to maintain a balanced diet that provides all the essential requirements to stay healthy and provide enough fuel for the activities. The menus are varied, use as much fresh food as possible, but slightly limited as all the food has to be carried either by porters, donkey or transported in the vehicles.  However, the standard and variety of meals is continually very impressive when you take into account the location it is prepared in and the equipment available.

Young wildebeest grazing in the Masai Mara in KenyaThe cooks have their own tent that is set up and organised to make the most efficient use of the space.  It is interesting to see how it all works and see where they produce all the meals, and they like to interact with the guests, as there is not as much interaction with them as the other staff.  Cooking is done on little gas-powered hobs and obviously the pots, pans and implements available to the cooks are limited.  It is important to maintain hygiene and the cooks are diligent in this respect, though that extends to you the traveller as well, keeping hands clean and regularly washed is extremely important.

Food on trek or one of our walking trips is plentiful; here is a typical menu for a day.  Starting with a good breakfast is important and we aim to always provide a (help yourself) cooked breakfast such as eggs, bacon, baked beans, sausages, and toast with porridge.  Packed lunches usually include a sandwich, egg or piece of cooked chicken, fruit, biscuits, cake, carton of drink etc.  On arrival in camp there is hot water for tea and other hot drinks and snacks such as popcorn.  Dinner is usually around half past seven and is often soup with bread to start, followed by pasta/ potatoes with some form of meat and vegetables. Watermelon is a common fruit in this part of the world and is often sliced and served for dessert.

If you require a vegetarian option please let us know in the special requirements section of the booking form.  We can generally accommodate a vegetarian diet, as much of the food on the trip is vegetable-based; please contact us before booking if you have a particular special diet.

Drinking enough whilst on a trek or walk is very important.  There is plenty of hot water at meal times to make drinks and there is always a regular supply of treated, sterilised cold water to fill bottles and hydration packs.
