Climb Kilimanjaro
by the Machame route, starting at the
Machame National Park gate in the rain forest on the southwest slopes
of Kilimanjaro, the Machame route to the summit provides trekkers with
a varied and interesting route. Rain forest with monkeys and birdlife
then becomes heather moorland with views to Kibo, Mt Meru and lava
formations that were deposited in past eruptions are just some of the
things to be seen - on the first two days!
Reaching Shira
plateau the gradient becomes more
shallow and the west face of Kibo ahead looms large. The route
traverses around the south of Kibo below the southern ice fields, and
crosses the Great Barranco on the way to Barafu, the last camp before
the summit. It is a hard climb to the crater rim at Stella point,
starting around 1 am and reaching the rim for sun rise, but the feeling
of achievement and the views make the top of Kilimanjaro, Uhuru Peak a
special place and well worth the effort. Whilst in some places
this route is steeper than others, to climb Kilimanjaro by the Machame
route takes in some superb scenery and is a great route to the highest
point in Africa.
