Kilimanjaro Marathon

Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle - when the sun comes up, you'd better be running - Anonymous

Run the Kilimanjaro Marathon and be part of a totally unique race; to run in Africa and experience the sights and culture is special, but to run the Kilimanjaro marathon or half marathon with the backdrop of the world's highest free-standing mountain, the world-famous African icon Kilimanjaro, just makes it even better.

Our Kilimanjaro Marathon/Half Marathon itinerary uses full board accommodation in a good quality local safari lodge to really make the most of your stay and ensure rest with good, plentiful food. Before the race there is an introduction to Africa on a one-day safari, including game drives and a lake canoeing safari. Then, another full day relaxing in the lodge to make sure you are over the flight and fully rested, ready for the race the following day.

The town of Moshi sits at the foot of the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro, on the Masai steppe in the Great Rift Valley in Tanzania, and once a year runners come here from all over Africa and the rest of the world to run the Kilimanjaro Marathon. The route passes through diverse scenery such as smallholdings, African plains and the Moshi town centre markets before heading for Kilimanjaro and a steady climb of about 300m up the lowest slopes of Africa's highest volcano before turning for the fast downhill to Moshi Stadium and the finish.

If you are over 21 years old (for the full marathon) and 18 (for the half) you can take part and run alongside some of the best African runners, who have got the course record down to 2hrs 16min. There are many more participants running for fun to enjoy the occasion - with a carnival atmosphere throughout the town, well-wishers lining the route, and a party at the start/finish inside Moshi Stadium, one cannot help but enjoy the whole experience! It is not uncommon for local children to run alongside the competitors laughing and playing - there is even the option of beer at some of the feed stations thanks to 'Kilimanjaro' beer being one of the race sponsors!

Whether you have been to Africa before or it is your first time, if you are a marathon 'racer' in search of a personal best, a marathon 'runner' in search of fun and enjoyment, or running the half marathon, to run the Kilimanjaro Marathon is a great occasion and unforgettable trip.

Why not take advantage of being in Africa, having already spent the flight cost, by adding any of our other itineraries and extensions on to the Kilimanjaro Marathon package to make it an even fuller African experience. It is a great, relaxing way to spend a few days after the marathon on safari in some of the world famous national parks such as the Ngorongoro Crater, or you may wish to take on the challenge of Kilimanjaro and trek to its summit via one of our trekking routes, or relax on a Zanzibar beach (see Trip Extensions for further details).
