Mount Meru

Mt Meru receives very few tourists compared to its better-known neighbour, Kilimanjaro, but it is a spectacular mountain climb (5th highest in Africa!) with great views of nearby Kilimanjaro and Arusha National Park below.  Starting at the Momella National Park gate we meet a ranger to accompany us throughout the trek, and walk across plains amongst animals to the forest at the foot of the mountain to start our climb.  With views above to the summit ridge and behind to Kilimanjaro the path winds upwards through the forests, where it is possible but rare to see leopard amongst the hanging vines and large cedar trees.  The path comes out of the trees and becomes more open as we gain height to our last camp before the summit, at Saddle hut in between Mt Meru and Little Meru.  The summit is 1000m above, and at the end of a long ridge (the old crater rim), as we climb there are views to Kilimanjaro and from the ridge we can look straight down into the spectacular ash cone that is below us, in the crater floor.  It is very impressive to see such a thing first hand and definitely helps make Mt Meru a unique experience, and at 4566 metres a great achievement.

Why not extend your trip and enjoy East Africa for a little longer either by combining any of our trips, or by adding a safari or beach extension detailed on our Trip Extensions page.
