Mt Kenya and
Kilimanjaro straddle the equator and tower
over the African plains with their summit snow and ice. They are the
two highest mountains in Africa and Kilimanjaro is one of the seven
continental summits. Our trek to climb Mt Kenya and Kilimanjaro on
Chogoria, Sirimon and Machame routes combines both these world famous
peaks via the most interesting and varied routes.
Climbing Mt Kenya
via the Chogoria and Sirimon routes,
we trek up one side and down the other so see much more of the mountain
and its different scenery, from lakes and rivers on the way up to
crossing below rocky pinnacles as we start our descent back down to the
vegetated lower slopes. Relaxing in Nairobi between treks we can look
forward to Kilimanjaro and really savour the experience having got into
the routine of a trek on Mt Kenya. Climbing Kilimanjaro via the Machame
route gains us height steadily through forest and onto the barren Shira
plateau. The Machame route has great views of Kibo and past volcanic
activity is obvious as we trek past lava formations and traverse below
the summit icefields on the south circuit path to start the last pull
to the summit, Uhuru Peak. At 5895 metres Kilimanjaro is the world's
highest freestanding mountain and an unforgettable achievement, made
easier and more enjoyable because of acclimatising to nearly 5000
metres on Mt Kenya. In terms of climbing East African mountains, to
climb Mt Kenya and Kilimanjaro on Chogoria, Sirimon and Machame routes
means this trip is as good as it gets!
